A Look Back … Arthur Goldberg: Fighting for Justice
August 13 – Arthur Goldberg is probably best known for his involvement in civil rights and labor law during his appointments as U.S. Secretary of Labor and Supreme Court Justice under President John F. Kennedy. However, Goldberg also spent a short time of his career working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—the predecessor to today’s Central Intelligence Agency.

A Look Back … Earthquake McGoon’s Final Flight
July 16 – On May 6, 1954, legendary pilot James B. “Earthquake McGoon” McGovern met his fate. An aircraft belonging to Civil Air Transport, a CIA proprietary airline, flown by McGovern was shot down by Communist anti-aircraft fire. McGovern and his flight officer, Wallace “Wally” Buford, were flying supplies to French forces at Dien Bien Phu in northern Indochina. McGovern, Buford, and four others aboard were killed in the crash. They were among the first American fatalities in the conflict in Indochina that would last until 1975. Several conflicting accounts of Earthquake’s last flight exist and the exact details are still not fully known and exist amid much myth and legend.
The CIA Campus: A Walk Outside Headquarters
July 9 – Where can you find a piece of the Berlin Wall and an A-12 OXCART reconnaissance aircraft? At the Central Intelligence Agency’s Headquarters in Northern Virginia. The beautiful, wooded campus of the CIA is home to these two pieces of history and more: the Berlin Wall Monument, an A-12 OXCART, the Nathan Hale Statue, and a Memorial Garden.

A Look Back … The Berlin Tunnel: Exposed
June 26 – In the rainy, early hours of April 22, 1956, a team of Soviet and East German soldiers began to dig at the municipal cemetery in Altglienicke in East Berlin. It had been an extremely rainy spring and there had been many short circuits in Berlin’s telephone network. The soldiers’ assignment was to unearth a buried telephone cable and check for damage. When they reached the cable, they made an amazing discovery: the cable was tapped and rerouted into a tunnel. The Berlin Tunnel (a.k.a. Operation Gold) was exposed.
An Agency Tradition: Remembering Fallen Officers
June 18 – On June 1, 2009, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees gathered before the beautiful marble face of the Memorial Wall in the Original Headquarters Building (OHB) lobby to honor fellow employees who have died in the line of duty. The memorial ceremony is an act of commemoration that occurs around Memorial Day each year. The families, whether their loved one died long ago or just that year, are invited, and many come year after year.
