Web Hosting Developer Website Resource, Linux Foundation, Unveils New Website

Filed under: Industry News — Money Guide @ 1:08 pm

San Francisco, California – (The Hosting News) – May 28, 2009 – web hosting developer resource and nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, The Linux Foundation (LF), has formally launched its new Linux.com website.

Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation remarked, ”Code and online participation is the new resume, and we want Linux.com to provide a framework for Linux experts to help each other and showcase their talent, knowledge and skills and ultimately improve their careers. We’ve also found that Linux users have a passion for improving the platform. Linux.com is the community’s resource, and the more information that is shared on Linux, the more benefit to all who participate. We think that active participation on Linux.com will result in an easier to use, more robust Linux platform.”

The Foundation took over stewardship of the site in March, at which time it began soliciting input from the community to help define the new Linux.com via its Ideaforge web tool. The new Linux.com will connect Linux users and developers, and by showcasing their skills through its guru listing, will connect individuals to jobs and collaboration opportunities. Instead of a static information site, the new Linux.com will empower the Linux community to share its knowledge, get questions answered, download the right software and find hardware to solve problems.

Visitors can register and immediately begin contributing to the community and build their Linux guru standing. Other community functionality includes allowing users to have their own blog hosted by Linux.com, review products in the product directory, and submit ”HowTo” and tutorials to help their fellow Linux users or developers.

Ultimate Linux Guru Wins a Dream Linux Machine Signed by Torvalds
Users can earn points toward becoming a ”Linux Guru” by participating in different activities on the site. Each year, the top Linux.com user will be recognized as the ”Ultimate Linux Guru” and be given a fully loaded ”dream” Linux notebook personally signed by Linus Torvalds as recognition of his or her guru status. The top five contributors to Linux.com annually will receive invitations to the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit and have a seat at the Linux.com planning meeting as community representatives. And, the top 50 annual Linux gurus on Linux.com will be included in a yearly report from the Linux Foundation: those high ranking users will be able to showcase their status and knowledge to potential employers or consulting opportunities. More information, including ”Guru” point values, is available at the site.

Linux.com is designed to mirror the Linux community process by hosting a collaborative framework where users and developers can connect and increase the collective Linux knowledge and resources for new and advanced users alike. The site is the central source for informed Linux information, software and documentation covering the server, desktop, mobile, and embedded areas. Linux.com also extends the Foundation’s existing content and community programs.

Major Linux.com features include:

- News
The Linux.com News section features original content and analysis as well as content from Linux Foundation workgroups, including FOSSBazaar and MoblinZone.

- Community
Highlights from the community section include an area where individuals can form or promote Linux and open source related groups. They can connect with other members as well as showcase their events, meet-ups and activities. The event features should prove valuable for users wanting to educate or participate in the Linux community and find conferences, user groups, or other meet-ups in their area.

- Distribution Central
This section showcases original content from each of the community ”distros” with contributions directly from representatives from Debian, Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu. Community managers and developers such as Jono Bacon, Joe Brockmeier, Paul Frields, Martin Krafft and Karsten Wade will join in conversations to help Linux users understand and use the leading Linux ”distros.”

- Learn
Highlights from this section include a centralized repository for Linux Documentation, including Man Pages and ”HowTo’s” from the Linux Documentation Project. In this section, users can also post questions or answer other user or developer questions to increase understanding of the Linux platform.

- Directory
The site’s directory is a user-contributed and user-reviewed database of software applications that run on the Linux operating system; Linux-compatible hardware components; and books, hosting, and other professional services available from the Linux ecosystem. This section also aggregates Linux application downloads to create an application store for Linux.

Inaugural Linux.com sponsors include Intel, NetApp, Novell and Red Hat.

The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux. Founded in 2007, the Linux Foundation sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and is supported by leading Linux and open source companies and developers from around the world. The Linux Foundation promotes, protects and standardizes Linux by providing resources and services that include exclusive events and online collaboration, including LinuxCon and Linux.com.

Intermedia Unveils Hosted Instant Messaging Service for BlackBerry

Filed under: Industry News — Money Guide @ 1:08 pm

New York, New York – (The Hosting News) – May 27, 2009 – Software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider specializing in messaging and collaboration solutions, Intermedia, has unveiled an instant messaging and presence solution that allows business users to engage in secure instant message conversations from BlackBerry smartphones to colleagues working at their desks.

Serguei Sofinski, CEO of Intermedia offered, ”’Host OCS 2007 on the BlackBerry is another first to market achievement for Intermedia. We continuously strive to help our small and medium business customers compete more effective.”

This Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS) for BlackBerry solution is designed to go beyond basic wireless email synchronization to better connect mobile and remote employees with their offices for increased collaboration and productivity. Intermedia’s offering is the first hosted version of OCS for the BlackBerry platform.

Rachi Messing, Vice President of Technology Services for DiscoverReady LLC, an Integrated Discovery Management solutions provider and Intermedia customer remarked, ”Having instant messaging and presence through OCS 2007 on our BlackBerry devices makes it easier for our staff to be in constant contact and able to share information. Intermedia’s services have greatly improved communications and productivity for our company and this new offering is an excellent extension of that.”

This offering is an extension of Intermedia’s existing hosted OCS 2007 service, which Intermedia was also first to launch in February 2008. OCS 2007 is a business instant messaging platform that integrates with Microsoft Exchange and Outlook to provide secure communication and integrated presence. Presence capabilities allow users to immediately determine at-a-glance their colleague’s status – available, busy, away and offline – enabling them to quickly connect with available colleagues. The OCS for BlackBerry solutions extends these capabilities to mobile users when they are out of the office. Combined, the two solutions provide small business customers with enterprise-grade unified communications tools that greatly increase collaboration and productivity at a price they can afford.

A recent Osterman Research study on instant messaging shows that mobile IM grew 18% in 2008, the fastest growing segment of the IM market. Osterman identifies ‘traveling employees’ and ‘senior technical managers’ as the biggest users of mobile IM. 52% of the study’s participants responded that enabling users to use IM on mobile devices is either important or extremely important to them.

Business users already heavily rely on their BlackBerry smartphones for telephone and wireless email communications. The OCS for Blackberry solution adds secure instant messaging and presence, to fill in the missing gap, and provide true remote connectivity and productivity capabilities to mobile workers.

Founded in 1995, Intermedia is the leading provider of business email including Microsoft Exchange hosting to the small and medium business market. Intermedia specializes in providing enterprise-grade solutions through its world class infrastructure and service to small and medium businesses at a price they can afford.

Web Hosting Firm, Paid, Deploys Enhanced E-Commerce Calculation Products

Filed under: Industry News — Money Guide @ 1:08 pm

Boston, Massachusetts – (The Hosting News) – May 26, 2009 – Celebrity web hosting and services provider, Paid, Inc., has upgraded its shopping cart software and related enterprise and retail software products, including patented online shipping calculation technology.

The updates are designed to help ensure that the AuctionInc family of products maintains its standing as the most accurate of any online shipping calculator software. The enhancements will enable Internet retailers to further increase productivity, reduce costs and enhance customer satisfaction related to shipping and fulfillment.

Richard Rotman, COO of Paid, Inc. remarked, ”E-commerce growth has slowed and vendors are seeking to maximize efficiencies and boost sales. ShopCart’s sophisticated and highly configurable shipping engine has been proven time after time to reduce the human resources needed to coordinate shipping, provide highly accurate rates that account for a wide variety of shipping situations, and greatly simplify post-sale communications between retailer and customer. Many sellers who moved to using our cart had previously discovered that hidden costs, such as packaging, special handling, delivery confirmation or oversize shipping charges were not being passed on to the customer and were eating into their profits. AuctionInc’s ShopCart solves these problems while, at the same time, not resulting in overcharging customers for shipping, something that customers are very sensitive about.”

The Paid AuctionInc software product line is available in multiple formats to meet the needs of the broadest array on Internet retailers ranging from major enterprise and multi-merchant organizations to online auction sellers. All retailers can benefit from the system’s ease and speed of integration while maximizing cost efficiencies, enhancing customer perception and reducing ecommerce abandonment.

Mr. Rotman added, ”Another major advantage is that AuctionInc’s advanced ‘Packaging Engine’ intelligently determines how to package all items in your shipment into the appropriate number of packages, taking into account carrier limits and account configuration settings, encouraging your customers to purchase more items in the same order and take advantage of reduced shipping costs.”

ShopCart provides real-time comparative shipping rates, recalculating automatically when items are added or removed, by using the country/zip code as a destination location indicator. In addition to calculating base charges for the full range of services from carriers including the US Postal Service, FedEx, UPS and DHL, a major asset is its granular accounting of additional item characteristics, such as packaging weight, item dimensions, special handling requirements, discounts/promotional offers, state taxes and shipping insurance costs. Administrator access allows highly detailed control and visibility of information such as customized carrier discounts, fixed rate alternatives, fuel and other surcharges, multiple ship origins and many more, based on independent, client-driven account settings.

At a time when consumers may be more price-sensitive than ever, it is hoped that consumers will appreciate retailers’ efforts to provide shipping charges that reflect the actual costs of shipping the products. Savvy online shoppers usually recognize that ecommerce sites providing free shipping often hide the cost in increased product prices resulting in higher overall costs, particularly for multi-item orders. ShopCart fosters additional sales by showing that shipping costs increase minimally and often not at all with the purchase of additional items.

ShopCart’s features include: Supports unlimited coupons based on order subtotal threshold Coupons can be applied to all items or selected item groups Cart page can be tailored to match the look and feel of your site Encrypted ‘Add to Cart’ HTML can be generated Wide variety of custom ‘Add to Cart’ / ‘View Cart’ buttons available Unlimited item ‘attribute’ feature allows you to pass on item features such as size, color, etc.’ Shipping Inspector’ provided for detailed view of shipping rate components for authorized users Checkout to PayPal, which accepts all major credit cards PayPal supports mailing label generation for UPS and USPS Recent upgrades to ShopCart’s shipping calculation functionality include:

Support for FedEx international priority flat rate pricing using their packaging – reviews flat rate and calculated rate and displays whichever is less expensive. The solution supports dimensional rates for all carriers

Supports wide variety of accessorial fees for special carrier services such as special handling, and delivery confirmation, among other features.

UPS discounted ‘shipment pricing’ supported for international deliveries Country-specific weight and dimension limitations for each service supported.

Supports drop-shipping from unlimited locations within the same shipment Sophisticated support for fixed rates as well as calculated rates. Differential fixed rates can be offered based on carrier service, geographical destination, and quantity of items. Multiple fixed rates can be offered for various service levels.

Support for customer pickup and local delivery Support for USPS flat rate packages and envelopes.

Differential supplemental item handling fee codes can be configured based on carrier service and/of geographical destination Shipping discounts can be configured based on item subtotal thresholds Paid’s shipping calculation technology is already in use by hundreds of companies, ranging from small online auction sellers to large enterprise systems, as well as and running within numerous e-commerce sites hosted and managed by Paid, Inc. Paid is continuing to seek software licensing agreements with all sizes of companies for its products, as well as well as explore other business relationships surrounding its patented technology.

Paid’s solution is hosted on a standard XML platform for ease of integration into the customer’s custom or open source cart or product, and is available for both single seller (SS version) and multiple seller (XS version) scenarios. In real time, ShopCart users and their online customers procure accurate rates from all major shipping carriers while administrative users can gain direct access to multiple data levels for inspection of shipping rate components and packaging detail.

Paid, Inc. operates a diversified set of businesses, including its celebrity services and AuctionInc ecommerce technology businesses. Paid, Inc.’s celebrity services provides celebrities and organizations with official web sites and fan club services that include e-commerce storefronts, ticketing and fan experience packages and web site content to attract tens of thousands of visitors daily. Using proprietary patented technology, Paid’s innovative AuctionInc brand shipping calculation and auction management software and services are utilized to streamline online auctions, ecommerce and web site development and hosting. The Company’s common stock is traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol PAYD.
